“Genuine … authentic … friendly … engaging … conversational….” I see terms like this in many casting requests. But what does it really mean?
It means that they are seeking an actor who really “gets it” and can understand the script from a real-world perspective. The emotional meaning BEHIND the words is being carried by the actor’s voice, just as it would be if the words were their own.
A trained voiceover actor knows how to find the proper tone, flow and pace to deliver a script smoothly and professionally while emotionally connecting with the audience. This is an important component of the work that is done before stepping behind the microphone, and which is obvious when it’s lacking. “Authenticity” is the result of hard work, good training, and self-awareness.
