Every time I get behind the microphone and read a script, I see the value of my ongoing training.
Scripts are just a series of words. But each new recording session reveals that I am getting better at capturing the emotion of the speaker, communicating a meaningful message, and finding the subtleties in a script that I would have overlooked before. (Shhh – here’s a secret – I sometimes didn’t believe they were actually there when my coach pointed them out 😉 ).
Even a short 30-second script can have drama, humor, and an opportunity to express myself authentically. Really. I enjoy seeing myself grow, and learning (or re-learning) things about myself as well. I love bringing my naturally supportive voice of authority to a deadpan and ironic line a la Monty Python. Or my warm, caring attitude to a very practical product pitch.
Dry, lifeless scripts are nothing until I add something personal to them and they come to life. There’s so much that lies beneath the surface, and the exploration is fascinating.
